Tarquin writes a monthly adventure news column for the Daily Telegraph and contributes regularly to the Financial Times and Men’s Fitness magazine. His work has also appeared in The Times, Sunday Times, and America’s Outside Magazine. On TV he’s presented for Channel 4’s Adrenalin Rush series and contributed to TransWorld Sport and the National Geographic Channel. "What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy." The mountaineer George Mallory’s often quoted "because it’s there" may have gone down in folklore but Tarquin prefers this more plausible explanation he gave as to why we do these things. Adventure isn’t just about ticking off goals, it’s about experiencing the essence of life in a high concentrate pill – the highs the lows, the struggle and toil, the friendship and camaraderie and yes, the sheer joy of it. When you strip away all that is superfluous in life and face the world with all you need – water, a map, food, something to sleep in – it’s incredibly liberating too. A regular speaker at the Daily Telegraph Adventure Show, Tarquin gives motivational talks at schools and has lectured at the Royal Geographical Society. All his talks are delivered professionally, without notes and are accompanied by slides and video. Key subjects are motivation, personal growth through facing one’s fears, and how to push yourself to compete in extraordinary feats of endurance. He is also able to talk about trends in extreme and adventure sports, having reported the endeavours of well-known explorers and adventurers for many years. But above all, he loves to entertain, to share his adventures and to inspire. As Mallory continued, "if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain… that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won’t see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life." |
